RESUTS OF VCU TESTING FOR HYBRID CORNS, 2015-2019

In the last 5 years (2015-2019), the South Center for Variety Evaluation and Seed Certification (SCVESC) has tested the 327 new hybrid corn varieties for Comparison Yield Trials, and 157 out of these for the On-farm Trials. The experiments were conducted in Winter-Spring, Summer- Autumn, and Autumn-Winter seasons at 3 locations in the Southeast region and another one in the Mekong Delta. Results have shown that 12.5% of the entries were identified as promissing varieties for production. Hence, the 20 of the promissing varieties have been approved for release by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), and some are currently occupying a large market share. -
During the last 5 years (from 2015 to 2019), South Centre for Variety Evaluation and Seed Certification (SCVESC) has carried out field inspection, seed testing and seed lot certification for a large numbers of seed producers and seed traders in South Vietnam. For field inspection, total 5,888 lines of G1 and G2 pre-basic rice were inspected; the percentage of G1 and G2 lines qualified for field standards was 84.2%. The areas of basic seeds and certified-class 1 seeds inspected were 3,700 ha with 97.4% qualified. Meanwhile, the inspecting areas of hybrid rice were 145 ha with 100% qualified. In terms of hybrid maize area inspected, there were 7,430 ha with 99.9% meeting the field standard. For seed testing, total 13,004 seed samples of all kind were tested with the volume of 179,201 tons of seeds; the percentage of samples under the national standards was 10.7%. In seed testing, the samples of inbred rice were the majority with total of 7,594 samples (126,872 tons); among them, 9.0% was under standards. The hybrids of rice and maize contributed 4,141 testing samples (51,128 tons) with 10.3% under standards. In addition, the testing samples of other crops were 1,269 samples (1,202 tons) with 22.2% under standards. For seed lot certification, total 2,337 seed lots (33,171 tons) of rice and maize were certified; only 1.1% of them was not qualified for certification.

RESULTS OF VCU TESTING FOR WAXY AND SWEET CORN, 2015-2019

During the last 5 years (from 2015 to 2019), South Centre for Variety Evaluation and Seed Certification (SCVESC) has conducted the Replicated Trials (basic testing) for 111 hybrids of waxy maize and 64 hybrids of sweet maize, as well as the on-farm trials (production testing) for 63 hybrids of waxy maize and 39 hybrids of sweet maize, in succession. The testing has been carried out in three seasons during the year (Winter-Spring, Summer-Autumn, and Autumn-Winter) at 1 location in Mekong Delta and at 3 locations in Southeast Region. In average, the percentages of promising hybrids determined through the test was 22-30% for waxy maize and 25-35% for sweet maize. 15 promising hybrids of waxy maize and 10 promising hybrids of sweet maize determined after 5 year- testing were presented in the report; most of them have been approved for release by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and some become the popular varieties in commercial production in Mekong Delta and Southeast Region. -
DUS TESTING RESULTS, 2015-2019

The testing for Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability (DUS) is not only the compulsory requirements in the Plant Breeder’s Right, but also an indispensable criterion of issuing the “Decision on circulation of new plant varieties” in Vietnam.
